Duo Universal Prompt

The Duo Universal Prompt: A New Look for Moravian's Multi-Factor Authentication

In March 2024, Duo Security retired the Traditional Prompt and replaced it with the Duo Universal Prompt. This will change the look of your daily sign-in process at login.moravian.edu.

About the Universal Prompt

With the new Duo Universal Prompt, you can expect a new, more secure authentication experience.

What to Expect

The first time you login to login.moravian.edu, you will be prompted to set up Duo Universal Prompt.

  • Click here for our support page on converting your existing Duo account to the Universal Prompt.

Once the initial setup is complete, Duo will choose the most secure device from the devices you have already set up in your Duo account.

You can use the default method, or you can click the prompt's "Other Options" button to select a different device, which will become your new default device in that internet browser.

After that first authentication with the new prompt, Duo will use your newly selected default device, unless you click the Other Options link and choose a different device to use moving forward.

Comparing the Traditional and the Universal Prompt

While the prompt styles differ in appearance, the Universal Prompt offers the same features as the Traditional Prompt, though organized differently.

To Use Other Authentication Methods

Instead of the Traditional Prompt device drop-down menu and green buttons, the new prompt is a cleaner design that shows your current prompt request.

To use a different method, at the new Universal prompt, click Other options to see the full list of authentication methods available to you.

Default Device and Action

Previously, the traditional prompt’s ‘Manage Devices’ settings included an option to select a Default Device and action to use whenever logging in with the device. With the Universal Prompt, this setting has been replaced. The Universal Prompt simply uses whichever method you used most recently. If you want to use a different method, just click ‘Other options’ in the prompt and select another method from the list.

Reduce the Number of Times You Need to Authenticate

Instead of checking the Traditional Prompt Remember me for 24 hours box, the Universal Prompt will ask if you would like it to Trust this browser after you authenticate. If you click the Yes, trust browser button, you will not need to authenticate with Duo when you log in with this browser for the next 24 hours.

After you have used the Yes, trust browser option for the first time with a particular browser and device, a Trust browser check box will appear directly in the prompt itself.

Never use the Trust this browser option when signing in using a public computer or a device that does not belong to you.

Use Your Existing Duo Mobile App

If you already use the Duo Mobile App version 4.0+ on your smart phone, the Duo Universal Prompt will not require you to change or upgrade.

The Duo Prompt Has a New Web Address

The Universal Prompt will temporarily take you to Duo’s website, duosecurity.com, rather than take place within login.moravian.edu, as the Traditional Prompt did.

This does not make the platform any less safe. It greatly increases security by allowing Duo to centrally deploy updates and patches to the Universal Prompt.

As always, be diligent about security.

Never approve a Duo prompt that you did not initiate yourself, or which is not located on the moravian.edu or duosecurity.com domains. If you receive a prompt that you did not initiate, contact the IT Security Office immediately.
